Drug Diversion Settlement
The U.S. Department of Justice (“DOJ”) recently announced a $4.1 million settlement with a hospital in Georgia to resolve allegations of failure to provide controls and safeguards against controlled substance diversion in violation of the Controlled Substances Act (“CSA”). According to the DOJ’s press release, this is the largest settlement related to drug diversion in a hospital.
The latest data from the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration showed that about 10% of health professionals are struggling with addiction.
The American Nurses Association reports the same—about 10% of nurses are thought to be abusing drugs and may be caring for patients while impaired.
